Tall Ships Youth Trust required a new logo and rebrand that suited their new direction as a registered charity. The initial brief for the work was to come up with a new look for the brand, and apply it to a prototype direct mail piece aimed at existing donors. From there it would be expanded out into a full rebrand including website and all collateral.
SPINNAKER is a design based on the Challenger series of round-the-world racers operated by the Tall Ships Youth Trust. On the understanding that the Trust had sold their square-rigger, this design addresses the bermuda-sail Challengers as their “main” vessels. The logo is designed to suggest motion. The pictured yacht is seen running before the wind, spinnaker flying, as if to leave the frame at great speed. This suggests advancement and “gaining ground” - mirroring the aims of the Trust in its work with disadvantaged children.
BRIG is a more “childlike” take, based on a schoolbook sketch over a corporate logo style. The drawing represents a small brig-rigged vessel - something that the Trust would introduce in the coming months. This treatment presents a much more friendly, approachable style, making it easier for young people to relate to.

RATLINES is a conceptual design, focusing on the idea of advancement for the young people taking part in the Trust’s activities. The logo depicts a young boy climbing the rigging of a square-rigged vessel. It represents not only the physical challenges of the Trust’s activities, but the metaphorical “climbing above”, “reaching” and other related positive contributions that sailing with the Trust can bring to the lives of young people.
FRIGATE is a modern take on perhaps the most classic and iconic tall ship sailplan - the three-masted frigate. This silhouette is likely the most recogniseable of all large wind-powered vessels - when one thinks of the Age of Sail, one cannot avoid thinking of the frigates. Typographically this logo demonstrates a drawing together of both young and old.

Tall Ships is one of my favourite projects even after all these years. Being lucky enough to support good causes with my work is always a highlight for me - even when working for brands like Saga I was still able to support CSR in their mission and I'm glad to have so many opportunities.
